Understanding Oral Cancer
Oral cancer includes cancers of the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses and throat. It can develop quietly and may not cause pain in the early stages. That is why regular screening during dental checkups is so important. Early detection greatly improves the chance of successful treatment and survival.
At Jolly's Dental Care in Indore, oral cancer screening is a routine part of our comprehensive dental exams. It is quick, painless and can literally save your life.
Risk Factors for Oral Cancer
Anyone can develop oral cancer, but some factors increase the risk. Tobacco use in any form, including smoking and chewing, is the leading cause. Heavy alcohol use also raises the risk, especially when combined with tobacco. Infection with certain strains of human papillomavirus, known as HPV, is a growing risk factor, particularly for cancers at the back of the throat.
Other risk factors include excessive sun exposure to the lips, a diet low in fruits and vegetables, a weakened immune system and age over forty. Men are at higher risk than women, and people with a family history of oral cancer should be especially vigilant.
Signs and Symptoms to Watch For
The most common early signs of oral cancer include a sore or ulcer that does not heal within two weeks, a lump or thickening in the cheek, red or white patches on the gums or tongue, and persistent pain or numbness. You may also notice difficulty swallowing, a sore throat that will not go away, a change in voice, ear pain or unexplained weight loss.
These symptoms can also be caused by less serious conditions, but they should never be ignored. If you notice any of them lasting more than two weeks, see your dentist or doctor for an evaluation.
What Happens During Oral Cancer Screening
During a screening at Jolly's Dental Care, we examine your lips, gums, tongue, cheeks, throat and the roof of your mouth. We look for unusual color changes, lumps, sores or texture differences. We also gently palpate your jaw and neck to check for swollen lymph nodes or masses.
Advanced screening tools such as special lights or blue dye may be used to highlight abnormal tissue. If we find anything suspicious, we may recommend a biopsy or refer you to a specialist for further testing. Most screenings take only a few minutes and are completely painless.
How Often Should You Be Screened?
Most adults should have an oral cancer screening at least once a year. People with higher risk factors, such as tobacco or alcohol use, may benefit from more frequent checks. The screening is usually done during your routine dental checkup, so it does not require a separate appointment.
Regular visits every six months give us the best chance to catch changes early. When oral cancer is found at an early stage, treatment is less invasive and the survival rate is much higher.
Reducing Your Risk
You can lower your risk of oral cancer by quitting tobacco, limiting alcohol, eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, protecting your lips from the sun and practicing safe sex to reduce HPV exposure. Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits also play an important role in prevention.
Even if you do not smoke or drink, you should still be screened. Many cases of oral cancer are found in people with no obvious risk factors. Awareness and regular exams are the best protection.
